This month, my daughter turned 14. And while in my head I’m in total and complete denial, on the outside it was SO fun to brainstorm with her on the marbled paper birthday decorations we decided to use for her party.
As my own kids get older (and no, you CAN’T put a brick on a kids head to get them to stay little), their birthday parties certainly become more of a “look” than a “theme”. It makes me a little sad to say no more roller-skate no more rock star – for my daughter’s parties at least. That is why we went with this marbled paper / geometric design. And once I accepted that it wasn’t going to be unicorns, I totally fell in love with the look!
The party activities were going to take place all in our backyard and garage – because that is where “Just Dance” is. Eighth graders are loud, sticky and full of energy, and I really wanted them to have a good time being themselves, rather than me controlling their every crumb. We totally lucked out on the weather – this February evening was just right for pizza and dessert at our patio picnic table (phew!).
After designing the graphics for these marbled paper birthday decorations, I was excited to come up with a whimsical dessert table backdrop! In addition to creating paper pennant banners in two sizes, stringing black patterned paper straws with painted wooden beads, a festive tassel garland – in a perfectly matching custom color scheme – was strung up.
I also designed a large photo canvas, using not only the party graphics, but also an ADORABLE photo of the birthday girl (taken by missy marie photography). And please check out that modern geometric faux piñata handmade by reBellista- I mean what a showstopper!
On the dessert table, a spur of the moment shopping trip to Michaels produced those black (painted over the original plain wood finish) and pink geometric risers, that were the PERFECT solution for this display. And the desserts, the desserts! Custom designed coffee mugs from TinyPrints held chocolate chip mug cakes, marbled lemon cake pops and marbled chocolate covered oreos from Bella’s Bakery sat aside party favors of tiny candy mixes. We also sprinkled the same mix candy to popcorn in our matching printable boxes.
For some extra seating, a totally accidentally but perfectly matching settee was the perfect place to add our personalized pillows from TinyPrints. The girls loved it and did not hesitate to take a million selfies while perched upon it.
Late in the evening, after we sang the Happy Birthday song, and after I warned the guests NOT to bum rush the dessert table, my sweet birthday girl gave me the biggest hug and genuine thank you. I just love her!
