For this installation of our Cookie Exchange Recipe blog hop, we’ve asked an actual baker to share with us, because, nobody knows cookies like a baker knows cookies. We are pretty grateful to our good friend Roni, from Roni’s Sugar Creations for sharing her Butter Cooke recipe.
Why a Cookie Exchange is the Best Holiday Tradition
Cookie exchanges are a fun and festive way to celebrate the holiday season with friends and family. They bring people together to share delicious homemade treats while discovering new recipes. Plus, they make holiday baking easier—rather than making multiple varieties of cookies yourself, you bake one type in bulk and come home with an assortment. It’s a win-win!
To make your cookie exchange even more special, consider adding a decorative touch to your dessert table. Our Retro Ornaments Christmas Printables can help you create a festive atmosphere with matching cupcake toppers, treat tags, and cookie exchange labels.

Decorating Your Sugar Cookies Like a Pro
Once your cookies have cooled, it’s time to decorate! Whether you prefer royal icing, buttercream frosting, or simple sprinkles, decorating is where the fun begins.
Royal Icing:
- 3 egg whites
- 1 pound confectioners sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
In the bowl of your stand mixer, beat egg whites on medium low speed until frothy about 1 minute. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add in sugar and vanilla. Once fully incorporated, increase speed to medium high and beat until stiff/shiny peaks form. Divide icing among small bowls and dye with gel food coloring if desired. Transfer to piping bags and decorate.
